Shattered Dreams: The Story of Mary Todd Lincoln (Notable Americans)
Published in Hardcover by Morgan Reynolds (01 July, 1994)
Average review score:

A compassionate picture of a misunderstood First LadyDavid Collins has presented an enigmatic character in a compassionate and lively manner. Mrs. Lincoln's instability is legendary, but when examined in a modern context it becomes more understandable -- even bogus! Given all the tragedies in her life, plus the possibility of medical problems (it is reported that both she and President Lincoln were plagued with migraines) it is amazing that she fared as well as she did. Collins starts with her insanity trial then journeys back to lay the stage for her son's action. Even though some might question the loyalty of a son who was declaring his mother insane, Collins manages to present him also in a sympathetic manner. This is a very engaging book that both I and my nine-year-old son enjoyed. With its handy index, it would also be a good volume for students preparing research projects.

Sound Hearing
Published in Paperback by Garlic Pr (June, 1992)
Average review score:

Sound HearingThis is an excellent book to understand how various degrees of hearing loss can be for some people. The cassette tape is very beneficial. I have used it when teaching college students who will be working with deaf-blind students and clients. It really helps to understand how even a slight hearing loss can interfer with communication.

A state of disunion: Arthur Griffith, Michael Collins, James Craig, Eamonn de Valera
Published in Unknown Binding by Muller ()
Average review score:

Four Great IrishmenThis is an interesting, if less than definitive, account of four of Ireland's most reknowned leaders--Michael Collins, Eamon De Valera, Arthur Griffith, and James Craig--and their contribution to Ireland's "State of Disunion". While not fully developed, these biographical accounts give an insight into the conflicts of men and ideas involved in Ireland's fight for freedom from Britain. The first three men were, of course, leaders in the War of Independence: Collins the guerrilla leader who, more than any single man, was responsible for the creation of the Irish Free State; De Valera the austere leader who oversaw the Free State's emergence as the Republic of today and led Ireland through much of the 20th century; and Griffith the intellectual founder of Sinn Fein, the philosophy and the party. The remaining leader, James Craig, the inflexible voice of Ulster unionism and opposition to bringing the six northern counties into the Free State, is shown as an astute defender of the status quo and manipulator of the British to that end. A recommended read for an overview of the forces at play then and now.

Statistical Experiment Design and Interpretation: An Introduction with Agricultural Examples
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (10 August, 1999)

A good little bookOne of the best experimental design books I've read. More attention ought to be paid to design as good design makes the analysis at the end that much simpler

The Story of Kodak
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (October, 1990)
Average review score:

Comprehensive history of company & technologies it pioneeredThis volume exhaustively recounts the history of "Kodak" cameras and films with an emphasis on Kodak's corporate personalities, photographic innovations and technologies. Throughout, the technical and corporate details are well supplimented by a large number of photographic prints - illustrating the fruits of the company's endeavors. The large "art book" format allows presentation of these historic photographs in appropriate sizes, and Abrams' fine paper does justice to the art. Overall, a very successful work.
Criticism: Although numerous Kodak cameras are illustrated in the book, camera collectors will need to look elsewhere for a really complete and ordered guide to Kodak's many offerings through the years. This work was not intended to simply catalog Kodak's products.

Tales of Terror and the Supernatural
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (October, 1972)
Average review score:

A MISLEADING TITLEA very entertaining bunch of short stories, with a misleading title. Of the dozen stories in this book, only two could possibly be deemed supernatural, and even those two might have more mundane explanations for the events described. Two other stories in this collection might be called action/suspense tales. But the others have nothing to do with terror or the supernatural at all. Rather, they are mysteries, or tales of false identity, or tales of blackmail, or of suspicion. All eminently readable, and all good fun. My favorite story in the book is "Mad Monkton," one of the tales with a more supernatural cast. This longish story takes its time but builds to a very satisfying conclusion. The mystery tales show Collins developing the type of format he would later perfect in "The Woman in White" and "The Moonstone." I feel that any fan of Collins would enjoy these varied stories. Just don't go in expecting a really scary time.

Tattooing the Invisible Man
Published in Paperback by Hardy Marks Pubns (September, 1996)
Average review score:

learning about a great manThis book features outtakes from a journal by Sailor Jerry. Itproves that he was not only a terrific tattoo artist, but also a manwith an intellectually stimulating mind. I was amazed at how his sence of humor jumped out of the pages and laughed out loud more than a few times. I am sure that if you love the art of tattooing you would love to hear the quips that Mr. Collins puts in this amazing book! END

To Kill A Mockingbird : A Unit Plan
Published in CD-ROM by Teacher's Pet Publications, Inc. (01 August, 2000)
Average review score:

Perfect for the busy English TeacherThe collection of literature units created by Ms. Collins are extremely well done. The lessons and activities are consistant and thorough for a complete unit study. Several different test options are provided as well as activities with varying levels of difficulty. This is the first set of literture units I've found that do not need to be adapted for classroom use. Just print and take to work. Many titles are available. Well worth the money!!!!
